The Motorola Cliq XT: possibly the Best FREE Cell Phone with a subscription

Nowadays, it is easier to sign up for a Free Cell Phones under a new subscription plan by subscribing directly to their carriers, or more often than not through online distributors who handle all the nuances and red tape that puts off many new subscribers.

Choosing among the myriad of choices can seem paralyzing, especially with the allure of having to own a cellphone that you don’t have to pay for—only its monthly subscription need be paid.

However, smart money is on the Android OS integrated phone, as Android is one of the most sought after feature when getting a new phone, particularly a new smartphone.

And standing true and tall among the crowd of free cell phones under the Android OS is the Motorola Cliq XT. The Motorola Cliq XT is made available by default from T-Mobile, and those who have had subscriptions to the network (or know someone who has) might remember the popular Motorola Cliq when it first came out a couple of years ago. Many people may think that the Cliq XT is the revamped, souped up version of the original Cliq, but it’s easily a misnomer, as the Cliq XT is definitely a cell phone in its own class.

Unlike the original Cliq and other Motorola cell phones from other providers—such as the Droid, Devour and Backflip on Verizon and AT&T—the XT has no slide out keyboard on it, making the unit lighter, slimmer and taller and much more pocket friendly.

The back is a pebbled, rubberized black texture for a fantastic grip. However, the unit also comes with a spare back cover, which is a smooth metallic purple finish.

The unit is equipped with the Motorola’s Motoblur suite, and offers features such as a unified social media update, universal inbox, and a host of other useful customizable widgets.

The XT boasts of an updated media player that’s a step up from its older sibling. It provides integration of several services into one place, including Youtube, GoTV and TuneWiki. The unit also has a newly-decked out on screen keyboard, and has a generous touch sensitive directional pad out in the front of the unit.

The XT also has Flash Lite 8.1 integrated into the HTML WebKit browser, giving you a superb experience with flash content sites such as YouTube. It also has voice command, a good 5 megapixel camera, and the standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capability.

The Motorola Cliq XT is head and shoulders so much better than its predecessor that it would almost be unfair comparing them. That said, lack of a sliding keyboard will force you to rely solely on the on screen keyboard, which, if you take the 3.1 inches screen real estate, does seem to take a lot of space. does take a lot of screen real estate. Many users seem to prefer getting the Swype application though, to make the keyboard interface much easier.

The XT’s “pinch to zoom” feature is wonderful, and its only drawback is that it does not work with Google Maps; you will need to use the zoom in toggles in order to see finer details of the map.

The Motorola Cliq XT is a real bargain among the other free cell phones models, and can even hold its own against other phones three times its price. Truly a hands-down winner in anyone’s book.

The screen is relatively big at 3.7 inches. It has an 8 GB built-in memory which can be expanded to 32 GB using a memory card.  The phone has a 1,400 mAH Li Ion battery which allows up to 575 minutes of continuous use and a standby time which can reach up to 315 hours. Weighing only 169 grams, the Droid 2 is one of the lightest keyboard smartphones currently out in the market.

The design of the Droid 2 is most definitely one of its highlights. Although it looks similar to the Droid, it is more curved and is has a slightly bigger dimension. Just like other Motorola Smart Phones, the Droid 2 has excellent graphics. Coupled with its large screen, the vivid colors of the background are visual treat.

Another great thing about the Droid 2 is its “Swype” feature. “Swype” is a predictive text feature which allows speedy texting. Like was mentioned earlier, the Droid 2’s keyboard is a huge improvement from the original Droid. While the predecessor’s keyboard was confusing and difficult to use, the successor’s is the complete opposite. It is more compact, thanks to the fact that Motorola removed the over-sized d-pads, causing less confusion.
